Gov. Daniels said that at least two private organizations have already proposed to run the state Keno. But Speaker Bauer and the other Democrats are still against the idea.
On April 20th, 2007, Republican Governor Mitch Daniels commented that at least two business organizations are more than willing to pay more than $2 Billion dollars upfront to the state and then about $200 million dollars annually to manage the Hoosier Lottery and earn from its profits.
That amount is double the estimate that Gov. Mitch Daniels gave last December when he said that they should lease the state lottery to a private organization with the upfront from the companies being used to fund innovative educational purposes. Daniel said he has a plan for about a billion or more.
Now that they know that the opportunity for the lottery is even bigger, it only makes sense to possess an elaborate conversation which is a good way to invest another billion dollars or more. The plans for the lottery privatization has met a huge block in the legislation, with criticism from House Speaker Pat Bauer and other Democrats who are the majority in the chamber.
The current session will end on April 29th, 2007. Last February, the Republican dominated Senate approved of the plan which will allow Daniels to lease the lottery to a private organization for about three decades, with the profits going to the programs for life sciences research and college scholarships for students who will stay in Indiana after they graduate from college.
Gov. Daniels said that he passed the companies’ proposal regarding the lottery with Bauer and the other leaders just last week but Speaker Bauer remains opposed to the idea. The Senate Proposal restricts a private business from using keno and other video games to widen gambling activities and restricts the growth regarding the profits the company could earn annually.
Daniels commented that his administration is reviewing unofficial offers from the companies and see if they have any substance. About ten American based companies passed offers for the keno management and one offer exceeded $1 Billion dollars.
